Samhain tarot spread
Halloween is the night the veil between worlds is thinnest. This five-card spread helps you release the old year, hear your ancestors and see what is waiting in the dark.
What is Samhain?
Samhain (say “SOW-in”) is the ancient Celtic festival at the end of the harvest. It marks the start of the dark half of the year and, for many witches and pagans, the new year itself. On this night the veil between the living and the spirit world is said to be at its thinnest, which makes it one of the most powerful nights of the year for tarot, divination and honouring those who came before us.
The Samhain tarot spread
- 1What I release
What is ending with this year? A habit, a fear or a story you have outgrown. Samhain is the witches' new year, so let it go with the old one.
- 2What the past teaches me
A lesson from your ancestors, your family or your younger self. What wisdom are they handing you now?
- 3What hides behind the veil
Something you have not seen clearly yet: a hidden truth, a secret gift or an answer just out of reach.
- 4What I carry into the dark
What to protect and nourish through the winter months. Your seed for the coming year.
- 5A message from spirit
Guidance from your guides, angels or loved ones who have passed. Read this card slowly.
A simple Samhain ritual
- Prepare your space. Light a candle, and if you like, place a photo or an object belonging to a loved one who has passed.
- Shuffle with a question. Hold the deck, breathe slowly and ask: what do I need to know as the old year ends?
- Lay out five cards. Place them in the order of the spread: release, the past, behind the veil, what to carry, and a message from spirit.
- Read and journal. Write down each card and the first feeling it gives you. Patterns often make sense days later.
- Close the ritual. Thank your guides and ancestors, blow out the candle and keep your notes until next Samhain.
